Project Archivist (processing) (posted September 18, 2017)

The Legacy Center, Archives & Special Collections at Drexel University College of Medicine is seeking a Project Archivist to process a twentieth-century collection of a woman physician and other collections as designated. This is a temporary project position structured as full-time, six-month project to be started as soon as possible and completed by June 30, 2018. We are flexible with scheduling provided the deadline is met, i.e. the work could be done part-time over a longer period.

The Project Archivist will survey the primary collection, create a processing plan, physically and intellectually arrange the materials and create a finding aid using Archivists' Toolkit. Traditional processing is anticipated but the survey will include an assessment of what processing level(s) are best applied to these materials. Additional, smaller collections will also be chosen for processing. The archivist will contribute to the archives blog and other outreach opportunities as possible during the project period.

The Legacy Center, Archives & Special Collections holds and manages materials reflecting the 165+ year history of Drexel’s medical school and its predecessor institutions, Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University. The Legacy Center is located on the Queen Lane campus of the Drexel University College of Medicine in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Visit http://archives.drexelmed.edu for more information.

Qualifications
Experience processing archival collections required, including knowledge of minimal and traditional processing. Master's degree in a relevant area preferred, although experience can be sufficient. Prefer demonstrated experience in and knowledge of implementing archival description standards, procedures and best practices. Confidence with desktop computing is necessary; experience with spreadsheets and with Archivists' Toolkit is helpful but not required. Curiosity and aptitude for problem-solving appreciated.

The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, good organizational skills, and strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to lift 40 pound boxes. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is essential.

Salary and scope
$20-$22/hour, up to 39 hours a week for six months, with project deadline of June 30, 2018 -- actual scheduling is flexible and there is a possibility that we may be able to secure funds to extend the position several months beyond this date. This is a temporary position without benefits. Please note the Legacy Center is located on Drexel's Queen Lane campus in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, easy to reach by car or public transit.
